Emergency services in Cornwall gathered on 1 July 2026 at the Royal Cornwall Showground in Wadebridge for the 19th annual Blue Light Day. The event brought together hundreds of adults with learning disabilities and autism to raise awareness about emergency services, how and when to contact them, and to build trust and understanding between these communities and emergency workers.

Breaking Down Barriers

Police Sergeant Flo Linscott from the Diverse Communities team emphasised the event’s role in reducing fears around emergency responders. She said, “We know that uniforms, loud sirens and flashing lights can be intimidating. Being able to show that we’re simply people here to help keep everyone safe, no matter who they are, is so important.” This approach encourages individuals to seek help in emergencies without hesitation.

Wide Range Of Services United

The event saw participation from Devon & Cornwall Police, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, Southwest Ambulance Service, NHS, RNLI, Coastguard, Search and Rescue, Blood Bikes, 4×4 Rescue, St John’s Ambulance, alongside charities and local support organisations. PC Sarah Treeby noted, “This is a much-loved event for many across Cornwall. Thank you to all our local partners who came together to help make this possible.”

Community Connection

Adults from local groups across Cornwall were invited to attend, engaging in activities and visiting information stands to learn about the help available during emergencies. Longtime planning team member Magi Omlo-Coad highlighted the event’s community value: “It is important this event is recognised as a wonderful opportunity for this community to spend time with friends and like-minded people and it offers them the unique chance to showcase and celebrate their talents and abilities.”

Annual Blue Light Tradition

Running for nearly two decades, Blue Light Day continues to foster understanding and trust between emergency services and people with learning disabilities and autism. The event promotes vital knowledge while offering a supportive environment tailored to the needs of these communities.
