A block of flats in Southampton has been cordoned off following a major emergency service response in the early hours, with forensic officers carrying out detailed examinations at the scene. Police descended on the flats in Weston Lane, Weston, during the early hours of Sunday, August 9. Witnesses reported seeing numerous police vehicles and ambulances, while a person was reportedly seen in handcuffs. A police cordon remains around part of the property, opposite Domino’s Pizza, while forensic investigators continue their work.
Witness reports person in handcuffs
Local resident Phil King said he drove past at around 4.30am and saw approximately seven police cars at the scene. He also reported seeing a person in handcuffs and an officer running to a police vehicle to retrieve a first aid kit. Another resident who passed the scene at around 6am described seeing a significant emergency service response. They reported seeing numerous ambulances and police vehicles and said a person appeared to have been inside an ambulance. Other witnesses reported seeing more than half a dozen police cars and two ambulances earlier in the morning. The circumstances surrounding any arrests or injuries have not yet been confirmed by police.
Forensics carry out examinations
Forensic officers remained at the flats late into Sunday morning. Investigators wearing protective clothing were seen repeatedly entering and leaving the building carrying equipment and bags. Cameras were taken inside the property, while forensic officers were also seen photographing areas outside. A forensic examination area was established on a table outside the flats, where items contained in plastic bags and placed on brown paper were being examined. Uniformed officers continued to guard the cordon while the work was carried out. Some residents remained inside the block and were seen looking from windows as the investigation continued.
Weston Lane remains open
Despite the significant police presence, Weston Lane remains open to traffic. The cordon is primarily affecting the pavement and the immediate area surrounding the flats. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has been approached for information about the nature of the incident. At this stage, police have not confirmed what happened, whether anybody has suffered serious injuries or the circumstances surrounding the reported detention. Further information is expected once officers provide an official statement.
