Tragedy as Child Dies in Greenwich Maisonette Fire

Firefighters from London Fire Brigade (LFB) battled a fierce blaze early on Saturday morning at a maisonette on Russett Way, Greenwich. They rescued a woman and two children trapped inside before rushing them to hospital.

Heroic Rescue Turns Grim

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters arrived at the scene after the alarm was raised just before 6am. The fire severely damaged part of the top floor of the split-level maisonette. Despite their swift action, one of the children tragically died shortly after arriving at hospital.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a woman and two children from the top floor of the property. They have all been taken to hospital, where sadly one of the children passed away,” said a London Fire Brigade spokesperson.

Police and Fire Crews on the Scene

  • Fire crews from Greenwich, Lewisham, Deptford, New Cross, Lee Green, and East Greenwich tackled the fire.
  • The Metropolitan Police confirmed their attendance and that the woman and remaining child are in serious condition.

Police were called by the fire brigade at approximately 05:56hrs after reports of the fire. The injured were taken to south London hospitals, where, despite the efforts of emergency services and hospital staff, one child died shortly before 8am.

The community remains in shock as investigations continue into the cause of the devastating fire.
