Heroic Police Rescue After Deadly Dad Stabbing and Fire in Nelson
Dad Stabbed Then Flat Set Ablaze in Shocking Nelson Attack
Police scrambled to a Nelson home near Caerphilly in the early hours of 16 November 2022 after a 32-year-old man stabbed his own father. But the nightmare didn’t end there — moments later, a mattress was set on fire inside the flat, sending thick smoke billowing out.
Officers Risk Lives to Rescue Neighbours
Officers from Gwent and South Wales Police, including joint firearms unit members, raced to the scene. They provided first aid to the victim while urgently searching for the suspect who had fled. Smoke was pouring from an upstairs window and lights suddenly went out.
The brave officers forced their way into the burning flat to save anyone trapped inside. Fighting searing heat, roaring flames, and dense smoke, they crawled on hands and knees with firearms drawn, risking their own lives in the inferno.
Neighbours and Pets Evacuated from Danger
The flat shared walls with three other homes, so police quickly widened the emergency search. PC Ashley Joseph and PS Geraint Hopkins helped evacuate two people and a dog from an adjacent property, ensuring no one else was caught in the blaze.
After an hour, a tactical plan was set. Five officers re-entered the flat with respirators supplied by fire services, ready for a third search. Meanwhile, a police negotiator located the suspect hiding nearby. He soon surrendered without further incident.
Police Praise for Bravery and Quick Thinking
“Every day, police officers put their lives on the line to protect the public. This incident is a perfect example,” said Phil Walker, Vice-chair of the South Wales Police Federation. “The officers nominated showed undeniable bravery, risking their safety to save others.”
Gwent Police Deputy Chief Constable Mark Hobrough added, “Their actions prevented what could have been a far worse tragedy. They acted quickly and decisively to safeguard lives.”
Superintendent Sarah Greening, acting head of the Joint Firearms Unit, praised their “extreme courage and tactical ingenuity” during the volatile and dangerous situation.
Gwent Police Federation Chair Matthew Candy said, “The officers responded quickly, calmly, and effectively, demonstrating the very best of the police service.”
This dramatic rescue is a stark reminder of the bravery our police show every day in protecting communities from harm.
