Chaos erupted near Marks & Spencer on Gallions Road this morning as emergency crews scrambled to tackle a suspected carbon monoxide leak. The alarming incident kicked off around 9.30am on December 16, sparking a major response from emergency services.
Dozens Rushed to Hospital
Greenwich councillor David Gardner revealed that about 35 people are currently receiving treatment after exposure to the dangerous gas. Official figures haven’t been confirmed yet as investigations continue.
Specialist Rescue Teams on the Scene
The London Ambulance Service sent in a full deployment, including hazardous area response teams, advanced paramedic practitioners, and regular ambulances. James Johnson, Strategic Commander, said:
“The incident is ongoing and we are working with our emergency services partners to manage this incident and continue to deliver service in the rest of London.”
Firefighters Race to Contain Carbon Monoxide Threat
The London Fire Brigade moved quickly after being alerted at 8.35am, dispatching two fire engines and two fire rescue units. A spokesperson confirmed:
“Firefighters are currently at the scene of a suspected carbon monoxide incident at a shop on Gallions Road in Charlton. Crews are working alongside multi-agency partners to resolve the incident safely.”
