18 Arrested as Police Clash with Protesters in Westminster
Chaos erupted in Westminster on Saturday, 24 October, as police made 18 arrests during protests. Three officers suffered minor injuries after violent scuffles with demonstrators.
Charges Range from Assault to Breach of Covid Rules
Officers arrested suspects for a range of offences. These included breaching Coronavirus regulations, assaulting emergency workers, violent disorder, and outstanding warrants.
Police Disperse Crowds Over Safety Concerns
All large crowds have now been scattered, but the Metropolitan Police’s operation will run into the evening. Commander Ade Adelekan, who led the policing efforts, warned some protesters ignored safety rules.
“One demonstration attracted a large crowd, and I became increasingly concerned that people weren’t maintaining social distancing or following their own risk assessment,” said Adelekan.
“The organisers failed to take reasonable steps to keep people safe, which voided their risk assessment. Officers had no choice but to disperse the crowds in the interest of public safety.”
“Most people listened and left quickly. Sadly, a small minority obstructed police, even blocking Westminster Bridge.”
“Our operation continues tonight. I urge Londoners to follow regulations, avoid large gatherings and keep social distancing.”
