Bomb scare off Stonehouse beach sparks major emergency response

A suspected explosive device has been found submerged near Stonehouse, Plymouth, triggering a full-scale emergency operation late Sunday afternoon.

Ordnance discovery sparks urgent action

At 2:46pm, HM Coastguard was alerted to a suspicious object underwater. Devon and Cornwall Police, Plymouth Coastguard Rescue Team, and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit were immediately deployed.

A safety cordon was swiftly erected and the nearby beach was evacuated as a precaution. The device remains unidentified but is being treated as potentially dangerous.

“At around 2.46pm this afternoon, HM Coastguard was made aware of an object suspected to be ordnance submerged in waters at Stonehouse, Plymouth,” a coastguard spokesperson said.

“Devon and Cornwall Police remain at the scene and have cleared the beach area, alongside Plymouth Coastguard Rescue Team. An Explosives Ordnance Disposal team is present and will be searching for the object with police and coastguards this evening.”

Bomb squad on standby for safer inspection

The EOD team is waiting for low tide, expected around 11:45pm, to conduct a thorough and safe examination of the object. Search and assessment efforts are ongoing through the night.

Authorities have urged locals and visitors to avoid the cordoned area while the investigation continues. No injuries or evacuations have been reported, and the situation remains under control.
