President Lula Mourns National Tragedy
“I have to be the bearer of some very bad news,” Brazil’s President Lula da Silva said during a solemn event in Itajaí. “A plane has just crashed in the city of Vinhedo. There were 58 passengers and four crew members, and it seems that all of them died. I would like to ask for a minute of silence for the victims.”
Crash Details and Investigation Underway
The doomed plane, registered PS-VPB, is a 14-year-old ATR 72-500 built in 2010. Flight tracking site Flightradar24 recorded its last signal about 90 minutes after takeoff. The transponder showed a rapid vertical descent between 8,000 and 24,000 feet per minute before disappearing.
