New Archdeacon Set to Shake Up the Isle of Wight Church Scene
The Bishop of Portsmouth has named Canon Peter Leonard as the next Archdeacon of the Isle of Wight. Currently Canon Chancellor at Portsmouth Cathedral, Peter has also served as acting dean since last summer’s retirement of the Very Rev David Brindley.
From Cathedral to Island
Peter takes up his new role just after Easter, as Canon Anthony Cane steps in as Dean of Portsmouth. Before arriving at Portsmouth Cathedral nearly five years ago, Peter was a priest in the Guildford diocese and also spent time as a teacher and headteacher.
Church Leader with a Broad Reach
He’s not just busy locally — Peter represents diocesan clergy on the Church’s national General Synod. He succeeds the Ven Peter Sutton, who left last summer to lead four Hampshire villages after a six-year stint on the island.
Bishop Praises Energised New Leader
Rt Rev Christopher Foster praised Peter’s flair and imagination. “He has done a fantastic job building community links and stepping up as acting dean recently. While he’ll be missed at the cathedral, we’re confident he’ll bring fresh energy and dedication to the island.”
The Bishop also thanked Rev Allie Kerr for holding things together during the vacancy, alongside mainland Archdeacons Gavin and Joanne.
“Please hold Peter, with Mark his civil partner, in your prayers as he prepares for this exciting new chapter,” said Bishop Foster.
Peter Leonard added, “Since arriving at the cathedral five years ago, I’ve loved getting to know the Isle of Wight. The passion of the church community here, both lay and ordained, is truly inspiring. I’m absolutely thrilled to be moving to this stunning part of the world and working alongside its people to build God’s kingdom of justice and peace.”
