Two Arrested After Scammer Tricks Elderly Man Out of Thousands
Police have arrested two suspects after an elderly Westminster man was duped into handing over £3,400 and precious valuables in a chilling fraud scam.
Fake Cop Runs Elaborate ‘Sting Operation’ Scam
Just before 10am on 10 January, a man in his nineties took a call from someone claiming to be a police officer. The caller convinced him he was part of a “sting operation” and needed his help.
Fooled by the ruse, the pensioner withdrew £3,400 from his bank account and later handed the cash plus two bank cards to a woman who showed up at his home.
Victim Handed Over Gold and Antique Coins
The same woman returned again, collecting gold cufflinks, antique coins, and commemorative coins from the trusting victim.
He was assured all items would be kept safe and returned within days.
Two Teens Arrested But Released Under Investigation
Detectives swooped weeks later. On 20 April, they arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of fraud. On 29 May, an 18-year-old woman was also arrested in connection with the scam.
Both teens were released under investigation as enquiries continue.
