Tragic Shooting on Stoke Newington Church Street Leaves Young Man Dead

Just after 1am on Sunday, 19 November 2006, 20-year-old Darren Ogiste was walking with friends along Stoke Newington Church Street when gunfire shattered the night.

A single shot rang out, followed by another five or six in rapid succession. Panic erupted as the group scattered, desperate to escape the sudden attack.

Darren Falls and Dies at Scene

Darren and a mate ran along the street, but tragedy struck when Darren collapsed outside the Church Street Supermarket. Despite being rushed to hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A post-mortem confirmed he died from a gunshot wound to the chest. Darren’s friend was also hit but survived his injuries.

Investigation Still Open – Police Urge Witnesses to Come Forward

Five men have been arrested over the shooting, but no charges have yet been filed. Detectives believe the community holds the key to solving this cold case and are pleading for anyone with information to speak up.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers said: “Sixteen years have passed since Darren was murdered, but no murder investigation is ever closed. My team and I remain determined to get justice for Darren and his family.

“Sixteen birthdays, Christmases and countless family moments have passed without him. That is not right. I know the family’s pain is as raw now as the day it happened.

“We believe there are people who know what happened that night – those who may once have stayed silent out of fear or loyalty but might now think differently.

If you have information, you can speak to us in strict confidence or contact Crimestoppers anonymously. Help us bring justice to a grieving family.”
