Gunman Strikes Early in South London: Young Man Dies from Leg Wound

A 25-year-old man suffered fatal gunshot injuries in the early hours of Thursday, 21 October, sparking a furious police hunt in south London.

Victim Identified as Gary Mayhew

Police were alerted at around 6.15am when paramedics rushed Gary Mayhew to hospital with gunshot wounds. Despite urgent efforts, he died later that afternoon. While formal ID is pending, officers are confident the victim is the Camberwell local. The post-mortem on Saturday confirmed the deadly bullet struck his leg.

Two Men Held After Dramatic Arrest

Firearms officers swooped on the evening of the same day, stopping a car on Asylum Road, SE15. They arrested a 27-year-old on suspicion of murder and a 37-year-old for assisting an offender. Both were taken to central London police stations before being released on bail until late November.

Police Plea: Help Crack the Case

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers, heading the investigation, made a direct appeal:

“Anyone near Belinda Road around 6am on Thursday who saw or heard anything suspicious must come forward. Dash-cam footage could be a crucial lead. Every piece of info helps us find those responsible for taking a young man’s life.”

Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove, overseeing Lambeth and Southwark policing, added:

“I’m deeply saddened by this loss to gun violence. We understand the shock this has sent through the community. Additional officers will patrol the area. Please speak to them if you have concerns. Together with partners, we’re committed to ending serious violence and supporting those affected. Our thoughts are with Gary’s family at this devastating time.”
