Freezing UK Roads Spark Urgent Safety Warning
With icy blasts set to sweep across the UK in the coming days, emergency services are on high alert. Drivers are being urged to get their cars road-ready and exercise extreme caution behind the wheel.
Police Sound the Alarm on Defective Tyres
Detective Inspector Kate Savage from Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit warned, “Each winter, collisions spike because of skidding on icy roads. Often, faulty tyres are to blame — problems that could have been avoided with a simple check.”
She added, “Check your tyres’ condition, air pressure, and tread depth regularly. Clear your windscreen properly before setting off. Having a current MOT doesn’t guarantee your car is roadworthy. You risk prosecution if it’s found defective.”
Firefighters Join the Safety Push
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue’s Station Manager Daniel Palmer backed the call, saying, “We’ve had mild weather until now, but plummeting temperatures demand extra vigilance. Allow extra time to check your vehicle and prepare for journeys. Remember the fatal four dangers: speeding, mobile phone use, no seatbelt, and driving under the influence. Any one of these drastically raises your collision risk.”
Crackdown on Christmas Drink and Drug Driving
Police are boosting patrols and setting up stop checks as part of a tough Christmas drink and drug drive campaign. The message is clear: stay safe on frosty roads or face the consequences.
