Simba the Fire Investigation Dog Sniffs Out National Award Shortlist

London’s finest furry fire detective, Simba, is in the running for a top national honour – and he needs your votes to take home the prize!

Hero Dog Finalist with a Nose for Justice

Simba, a five-year-old English springer spaniel, has been shortlisted in The Kennel Club’s Hero Dog Awards under the Extraordinary Life of a Working Dog category. Since 2018, he has been a vital member of the London Fire Brigade’s Fire Investigation team, working closely with his handler, Station Officer Anton Keach.

Trained to sniff out ignitable substances, Simba can detect tiny traces of accelerants that often reveal if a fire was deliberately set. His super-sensitive nose covers large areas quickly, cutting down investigation time and costs. In one high-profile case, Simba’s evidence helped link murderers to a fatal fire in London.

More Than Just a Sniffer Dog

Simba doesn’t just sniff out clues — he supports fire and police teams across London and neighbouring counties with investigations. He’s also a brilliant ambassador for the Brigade, raising public awareness and connecting especially well with children to promote fire safety at home.

“Simba really deserves to win this award and it’s an honour that he’s been recognised against such tough competition,” said handler Anton. “He also provides great therapy for all of us on the Fire Investigation team. We see some awful things, and Simba can read people’s emotions, offering support when we need it most. He always lifts the spirits of firefighters after tough days.”

Anton added, “He’s a crucial part of our team and London Fire Brigade is incredibly proud of him. While all the dogs nominated deserve to win, we’d be grateful for your vote if you’ve met Simba or are a fan of his work.”
