The Metropolitan Police is reeling after losing five officers in just weeks to Covid-19.

Tragic Toll Among Frontline Officers

  • PC John Fabrizi died on Sunday, 25 January.
  • PC Michael Warren, part of the Territorial Support Group, passed on Tuesday, 19 January.
  • Traffic Police Community Support Officer Chris Barkshire died Monday, 11 January.
  • PC Sukh Singh from the Met’s forensic command died yesterday after battling Covid.
  • Within the last 24 hours, a Custody Sergeant from Met Detention also succumbed to the virus.

Commissioner Cressida Dick Speaks Out

Commissioner Cressida Dick expressed deep sorrow at the mounting losses. She said:

“I’m deeply saddened by the news that in recent days and weeks COVID has taken five of our colleagues from us. Policing is a family and the scale of our loss is truly shocking.”

She offered her “deepest condolences” to the families and friends of the fallen officers, including those lost earlier in the pandemic like Public Access Officer Ramesh Gunamal, PCSO Charles Harding, and Call Operator Sophie O’Neill.

Covid Hits Those Who Can’t Work From Home

The Police Commissioner highlighted the harsh reality:

“COVID has had a devastating impact across London and the entire country. Policing is not immune. Our officers and staff, who fight crime, respond to emergencies and live within communities, inevitably come into contact with the virus.”

She added, “Police officers and many staff cannot fight crime or protect the vulnerable by working from home.”

The Met’s frontline heroes continue to face grave risks as the pandemic rages on.
