Suella Braverman Targets American XL Bully Dogs After Birmingham Attack
Home Secretary Suella Braverman has slammed American XL bully dogs as a “clear and lethal danger” following a terrifying attack on an 11-year-old girl in Birmingham. She is now seeking advice on potentially banning these dogs across the UK.
11-Year-Old Girl Mauled in Birmingham
The shocking incident took place in Bordesley Green, Birmingham. An American XL bully dog attacked a young girl and two men who bravely stepped in to protect her. West Midlands Police quickly launched an investigation into the horror assault.
“This is appalling. The American XL Bully is a clear and lethal danger to our communities, particularly to children,” Braverman said.
Breed Ban Debate Underway
Officials at Defra – the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs – are now debating the possibility of outlawing the American XL bully. The dog is not formally recognised as a distinct breed by the Kennel Club, complicating potential bans.
Concerns have been raised that defining this dog as a separate breed could be tricky. They also fear a ban could unintentionally include other breeds. It’s a thorny issue that will require careful study before action is taken.
Current Legal Restrictions on Dangerous Dogs
At present, the UK bans several dog breeds deemed dangerous. Owning, breeding, or selling these banned dogs is illegal, with strict penalties in place.
Braverman’s strong words put the spotlight on American XL bully dogs, sparking a fierce debate over public safety and pet ownership laws in Britain.
