Fatal Police Shooting in Dagenham Under IOPC Investigation
Man Shot Dead by Met Officer
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is probing a fatal police shooting in Dagenham, East London, that happened last night. Just before 9pm, a Metropolitan Police officer fired two shots at a man, who later died at the scene around 9:30pm despite first aid attempts by officers.
Firearms Found Near Scene
Investigators discovered what appears to be a non-police issue firearm near the man, plus another gun inside the property. Both weapons are being sent for ballistic testing as part of the ongoing inquiry.
IOPC Launches Urgent Probe
The IOPC was alerted by the Met Police Service around 10pm and quickly dispatched investigators to the scene. Officers involved have provided initial statements while the IOPC continues gathering evidence, including police call logs and body-worn camera footage.
Director Amanda Rowe Speaks Out
“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and all affected by this tragic incident. We’ve reached out to his family to offer sympathies and explain our role,” said IOPC director Amanda Rowe.
“Given a man has died after being shot by police, we must investigate every detail, including police actions and decisions. We know questions will arise, but it’s vital we establish the facts before commenting further.”
The investigation is at an early stage. IOPC officers remain at the scene and plan to interview neighbours and any potential witnesses as the inquiry unfolds.
