Violent thug arrested after abusing NHS worker on walk home
Hampshire Police swooped on a violent man who attacked an off-duty NHS staff member at Coppins Bridge Roundabout on Tuesday evening. Passersby and a St John Ambulance worker stepped in to help officers pin the man down in a dramatic takedown caught on video.
Brave public and St John’s staff assist officers
Footage from a driver showed the aggressive suspect being held on the ground after a furious outburst towards the healthcare worker. The man, described as 24 years old and from Lake, was arrested shortly before 5.30pm.
Isle of Wight Police thanked the courageous woman and St John Ambulance staffer for their swift intervention. They said: “Your neighbourhood officers detained a violent man abusing an NHS worker on their walk home. Thanks to members of the public and St John’s staff who helped us!”
Suspect taken in for questioning
The 24-year-old was taken to Newport Police Station. Hampshire Constabulary confirmed he was arrested on suspicion of obstructing a police officer and using threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress under Section 5 of the Public Order Act.
He has since been released under investigation as inquiries continue.
