Justice Secretary Demands Probe Into Terror Suspect Jail Placement After Shocking Escape
Justice Secretary Alex Chalk has launched a full investigation into how terror suspects are housed in UK prisons following the dramatic escape of Daniel Khalife, who faced terror charges.
Why Was Khalife in Wandsworth, Not High-Security Belmarsh?
Chalk faced tough questions over why Khalife was locked up at Wandsworth prison, a category B facility, instead of being held at the ultra-secure Belmarsh prison. Speaking to Sky News, he stressed the urgent need to understand the criteria behind prisoner placements.
“We must get to the bottom of why suspects like Khalife aren’t always in the highest-security jails,” Chalk said. However, he did not reveal how many terror suspects are currently in category B prisons instead of category A, citing the complexity of cases.
Escape ‘Extremely Rare’ But Taken Seriously
Khalife’s breakout has sent shockwaves through the prison system. Chalk assured the public that such escapes are “rare but taken extremely seriously.”
An official inquiry is now underway to examine the circumstances of the escape and how prisoners like Khalife are classified. Preliminary findings are expected by the end of the week.
Security Under Scrutiny
Chalk insisted that proper security measures and staff were in place at Wandsworth but admitted it’s vital to determine whether protocols were followed correctly.
He expressed confidence in the senior leadership of the prison service and the Wandsworth prison governor to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation into how this shocking escape happened.
