Flood Chaos: Two English Counties Declare Major Incidents Amid Extreme Weather
The UK is facing a storm of flooding and disruption as two counties declare major incidents amid relentless downpours and freezing conditions. Heavy rains have unleashed widespread flooding across England, triggering hundreds of alerts and multiple rescues. Tragically, authorities have recovered a man’s body from floodwaters in North Yorkshire.
Tragedy in North Yorkshire
Police in North Yorkshire confirmed the grim discovery near Intake Lane in Beal, close to Eggborough and Knottingley. The victim, described as a white man in his 50s or 60s with light brown short hair and stubble, is believed to have entered the floodwaters within the past 24 to 48 hours. Although he has been “informally identified,” the cause of death remains unclear.
Leicestershire and Lincolnshire Declare Major Incidents
Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service was first to sound the alarm, declaring a major incident after receiving over 200 emergency calls since Monday morning. They have rescued 59 people trapped in dangerous floodwaters. Lincolnshire followed suit, alerting the public to the worsening threat as freezing temperatures risk turning standing water into ice.
In a heroic effort, Lincolnshire emergency teams and volunteers evacuated 45 schoolchildren stranded at Edenham school, ensuring their safety amid treacherous conditions.
PM’s Message as Floods Devastate Communities
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer addressed the crisis on social media, saying:
“Major incidents have been declared in Lincolnshire and Leicestershire due to severe flooding. My thoughts are with all those affected, and my thanks go to the responders working hard to keep communities safe. Anyone in these areas should follow advice from emergency services.”
Currently, 190 flood alerts are active across England, including a severe alert on the River Soar near Barrow upon Soar in Leicestershire. Over 300 additional flood warnings remain in place nationwide.
Persistent Weather Warnings and Travel Chaos
The Met Office has issued three yellow weather warnings for snow and ice, extending into Tuesday morning. These conditions are set to hamper emergency efforts and disrupt daily life.
Officials strongly urge residents in affected areas to stay alert, follow official guidance, and avoid unnecessary travel as the UK grapples with this extreme weather onslaught.
