Bishop Auckland’s UKRO Regional Event Draws Huge Crowds
Emergency services wowed the public at Bishop Auckland Community Fire Station’s open day on May 14th. Hundreds flocked to see the Regional UKRO and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Centre in action. From quad bikes and blood bikes to sniffer dogs and horses, there was plenty to keep visitors entertained. But it was the UK Rescue Operation (UKRO) display that really stole the show.
Rescue Teams and Firefighters Battle It Out
The open day wasn’t just about showcasing—they brought competition too. Fire crews from across County Durham joined in, along with the reigning Scottish Fire and Rescue Challenge champs from Ayr. However, all eyes were on Lincolnshire’s Fire and Rescue Service Extrication team, who bagged the top prize for the second year running with a knockout performance.
Stars, Vintage Engines, and Charity Stalls
The excitement didn’t stop there. The county’s Police Interceptors team turned up with their fast cars, while a vintage fire engine took a nostalgic spin through the crowd. Several charities also set up stalls, offering advice and raising awareness for local causes.
Praise from Local Leaders
The event was organised by district manager Adam Hall and assistant district manager Paul Cummings from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service. Bishop Auckland Mayor Lee Brownson was on hand to congratulate the organisers. “It’s a fantastic turnout, double the size of last year’s event,” Lee said. “Seeing families and kids engage with the emergency services helps break down barriers and boosts understanding of the vital work they do.”
Fire Chief Stuart Errington added, “It’s been an excellent event. We were really overwhelmed by the number of visitors and the variety of attractions on offer.”
