Met Police Ban Tractors at London Farmers' Protest
Protest Set for Whitehall on Tuesday
The Metropolitan Police have slammed the brakes on tractors and large farming vehicles ahead of a farmers’ protest in central London on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. Demonstrators will gather in Whitehall from 11:00 AM, with the march kicking off around noon.
The route takes protesters from Whitehall to Trafalgar Square, down Northumberland Avenue, along the Embankment, before looping back via Westminster Bridge Road and Parliament Street. A rally will then run in Whitehall from 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM.
Police Crackdown on Farming Vehicles
Under strict Public Order Act conditions, farmers are banned from bringing tractors or large vehicles unless they receive explicit police approval. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ben Russell, leading the policing operation, blasted the previous protests that caused major chaos.
“Two previous protests have taken place in the same area, with the same organisers, in recent months. The second protest saw a significant number of people attend with tractors and other large farming vehicles, blocking Whitehall for much of the day and causing significant delays on surrounding roads.” “It is our responsibility to ensure that protests don’t cause serious disruption to the life of the community, and we’ve used our powers under the Public Order Act to ensure that does not happen on Tuesday.”
Legal Restrictions and Tough Penalties
The Public Order Act sections 12(3) and 14(3) prohibit protesters from using any mechanically propelled vehicles during the march without prior Metropolitan Police authorisation.
Ignoring these rules or encouraging others to do so could lead to a criminal offence and arrest.
Met Police and Organisers Work Together
The Met say they’ve been in regular contact with the protest organisers and appreciate their cooperation to keep disruption minimal.
