Vile Vandal Attacks Lee Rigby Memorial Near Woolwich Barracks
Shameful vandalism has struck the memorial of Fusilier Lee Rigby, murdered in a brutal 2013 attack. The tribute, just metres from where Rigby was stabbed outside Woolwich barracks, was left wrecked on Sunday.
Flowers Uprooted, Memorial Stone Smashed
Plant pots were smashed, flowers ripped up, and both a tree and the memorial stone suffered damage. These were honours planted by the Royal Borough of Greenwich to remember Rigby’s tragic death.
Quick Police Arrest After CCTV Footage
The Metropolitan Police caught the culprit in the act at 12:47 PM, arresting 31-year-old Connor Tuxford, a local warehouse worker and resident. Witness Connor described seeing the suspect tearing up flowers and smashing jars before police arrived. “After he was taken away, I cleaned up the memorial because no one else did,” he said, earning applause from passersby.
Tuxford added the vandal seemed to be seeking attention, lingering at the scene until police showed up. Thanks to CCTV footage, officers acted swiftly to nab the man, who was taken into custody.
Community Outraged; Investigation Continues
“Officers attended and a man was arrested at the location. He has been taken to police custody,” said a Metropolitan Police spokesperson.
Local residents have voiced anger and sorrow at the disrespect shown. They stress the importance of protecting such memorials, sacred reminders of lives lost to senseless violence. The investigation remains open, with more details expected soon.
