A man was rushed to hospital strapped to a spinal board after a dramatic late-night crash on the Isle of Wight. Emergency crews scrambled to Victoria Avenue in Shanklin just before midnight on Thursday after a vehicle flipped onto its roof, trapping the driver inside.
Firefighters Battle to Free Trapped Driver
Two fire crews from Shanklin and Sandown raced to the scene, joined by paramedics from the Island’s ambulance service. Firefighters used heavy-duty spreading and cutting tools to remove the vehicle’s tailgate and gain access to the rear.
Half an Hour Trapped Inside Capsized Car
Rescue teams then employed a tunnelling technique to carefully create space inside the overturned vehicle and safely extract the man on a spinal board. He was trapped for around 50 gruelling minutes before paramedics treated him at the scene and rushed him to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport for urgent care.
This dramatic rescue highlights the bravery and skill of the Isle of Wight’s emergency services in tackling serious road accidents.
