One Trapped After Two-Car Smash Closes Key Isle of Wight Road

A serious two-vehicle crash on Whippingham Road in East Cowes has shut down a major route on the Isle of Wight this evening. The collision happened shortly after 8pm, sparking a full emergency response.

Road Closed, Emergency Crews Rush In

Police have blocked Whippingham Road in both directions, from Lushington Roundabout towards East Cowes, while they tackle the incident. Drivers are being redirected via Brocks Copse Road, with local traffic diversions now in place.

Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue have sent crews from Newport and East Cowes to the scene. One vehicle is reported to have flipped onto its side, lodged in a hedge, while the other suffered heavy damage.

One Person Trapped, Rescue Underway

“One person is trapped in one of the vehicles,” confirmed a fire service spokeswoman.

Firefighters are using cutting tools to free the trapped individual. A rescue tender from Newport has also joined the operation. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is on standby to assist with any medical evacuations.

Transport Disruption Hits Buses and Ferries

Southern Vectis buses are affected, with Routes 4 and 5 unable to serve East Cowes. Passengers are advised to travel into Newport and switch to Route 1 to Cowes, then use the floating bridge to reach East Cowes.

Red Funnel ferry users are warned of the road closure and encouraged to find alternative routes.

Police Warn Road Could Stay Shut For Hours

A spokesman for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police Roads Policing team said the road would remain closed for “some time” as emergency crews continue their work. More updates to follow.
