Big Police Operation Set for London This Saturday

London is gearing up for a massive police presence this Saturday. Over 2,000 officers, including more than 400 from outside the capital, will patrol the streets during the Champions League Final and multiple protests. The Met Police are pulling out all the stops to keep the city safe and orderly.

Champions League Final and Fan Events Under Watch

The football showdown between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid kicks off at Wembley at 8pm. Alongside the match, numerous fan events are planned across London on Friday and Saturday.

T/Commander Louise Puddefoot, heading the policing operation, said:

“We want fans visiting London for this fantastic event to have a safe and enjoyable experience. There will be a visible police and stewarding presence not only around Wembley but also at fan zones and other events. Anyone seeing anything suspicious should speak to officers or stewards.”

Protests to Shake Up Central London

Saturday will also see several protests demanding heavy police oversight. The high-profile march organised by Tommy Robinson will start near Victoria at 1pm, ending with speeches and a film screening at Parliament Square.

“We’re aware many attendees have links to football disorder,” added T/Commander Puddefoot. “We’ve imposed strict Public Order Act conditions to keep the protest controlled and prevent serious disruption or disorder.”

A counter-protest by Stand Up To Racism will be held in Whitehall from midday. Police will make sure the two demonstrations stay apart to avoid clashes.

Youth Demand’s Disruptive Plans and Sensitive Areas

A smaller protest by Youth Demand, targeting the Gaza conflict, threatens to block roads and bridges, risking chaos on London’s streets.

“They’ve made no secret of their intention to cause serious disruption,” Puddefoot warned. “This group hasn’t engaged with police, but if they do, we’ll remind them their right to protest doesn’t include blocking key routes or emergency services.”

There is also a potential protest in Finchley, near a large Jewish community, planned against the Gaza conflict. To prevent fear or intimidation, the police have imposed conditions restricting the protest to a static demonstration away from residential areas.

T/Commander Puddefoot concluded:

“There’s a big difference between a central London protest and one walking through a sensitive residential area. We must balance the right to protest with the public’s right to safety and peace.”

Police Ready to Act

The Met will police protests firmly but fairly, aiming to keep everyone safe while cracking down on any criminal behaviour or disruptions. Fans, protesters, and Londoners alike are urged to cooperate with officers for a smooth weekend.
