Young Woman Dies in E-Bike Fire on New Year’s Day
A 21-year-old woman tragically died in a house fire sparked by a blazing e-bike on New Year’s Day 2023. Sofia Duarte, described by family as adventurous, lost her life in the flames and thick smoke that engulfed a Southwark property on Old Kent Road.
Terrifying Blaze Erupts in Mixed-Use Building
The fatal fire broke out just before 5pm in a building that housed a ground-floor shop and flats above. Neighbours reported a loud explosion around 4:50pm, shaking the entire block.
Sofia and her boyfriend Luis were asleep after a nightclub shift when the fire started. Luis told the inquest at London Inner South Coroner’s Court how he jumped from a window to escape the heat and acrid smoke, desperately thinking Sofia was right behind him. Unfortunately, Sofia became hopelessly disoriented in the smoke and couldn’t get out.
Firefighters’ Rescue Efforts Fail
Despite the valiant efforts of the emergency services, Sofia’s body was found in a corridor. She was pronounced dead at 5:37pm, having succumbed to burns and smoke inhalation.
Investigators traced the source of the blaze to an e-bike charging in the house entrance. The bike’s unbranded lithium-ion battery pack burst into flames and exploded. The exact cause remains unknown but may include faults like overcharging or battery malfunction.
Family Calls for Stricter E-Bike Safety Rules
Sofia’s devastated family begged the coroner to order a prevention of future death report to avoid repeat tragedies. They demanded tougher laws on e-bike storage and charging safety. However, the coroner ruled Sofia’s death accidental and declined their request due to lack of conclusive evidence.
Refusing to let Sofia’s death be in vain, her family launched a petition urging MPs to tighten regulations around e-bike quality control and battery handling. Their campaign aims to protect others from suffering a similar heartbreaking fate.
