Man Dies After Altercation at Lullingstone Castle – Police Hunt Witnesses

Detectives from Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate are urgently appealing for witnesses following the death of a 66-year-old man at Lullingstone Castle, Eynsford.

Drone Footage Could Hold Key Clues

Kent Police want to speak to the owner of a drone believed to have been flying over the grounds during the incident. The drone may have captured crucial video evidence.

The tragedy unfolded on Thursday 28 May 2020, when officers were called at 5.21pm to reports of a disturbance in the castle grounds. Emergency crews pronounced Charlie Hilder from Romford, Essex, dead at the scene.

Possible Altercation with Teenagers Near Lake

Reports suggest Charlie may have been involved in a scuffle with two boys or teenagers near a lake on the estate shortly before his death.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Gavin Moss said:

“We continue to appeal for information from anyone who saw two young people near the lake between noon and 7pm, one possibly carrying a fishing rod. Many people – cyclists, joggers, dog walkers, anglers, and golfers – were in the area, and some may have photos or videos that could help.”

“We’re particularly keen to speak to anyone near the gatehouse or the car park next to the lake. We’ve also been told a drone was flying at the time and want to trace its owner to check for footage.”

Dashcam Footage Sought

Detectives are also asking for dashcam clips from vehicles travelling on Castle Road or Shoreham Road between 12pm and 7pm on the day of the incident.

Anyone with information should call Kent Police on 01622 604100, quoting reference 28-1127. Video evidence can be uploaded at the Major Incident Public Reporting Site.
