Hampshire’s Crime-Fighting Hero Clocked Over 1,000 Volunteer Hours

Special Sergeant Daniel Van-Gelder has been hailed a crime-busting legend after dedicating more than 1,000 hours of his free time to keeping Hampshire and the Isle of Wight safe. The part-time officer, who also works as a chartered surveyor, scooped the coveted Special of the Year award.

From Emergency Calls to Major Drug Busts

Since joining the Special Constabulary in January 2019, Daniel has been a powerhouse on the force. Promoted to Special Sergeant in 2022, he’s attended 111 grade 1 emergency incidents, handled 278 other cases, and led investigations into 250 crimes. His standout moments include taking huge drug hauls off the streets.

“Daniel is an all-round amazing officer and leader who Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary are incredibly fortunate to have,” praised Special Chief Inspector Lauren Taylor.

One recent stunt saw him spot a vehicle parked illegally in the city centre. Upon stopping, he detected a strong cannabis smell, searched the car, and seized two rucksacks of cannabis along with mobile phones and drug gear. He even prosecuted the drivers, staying late to see justice done.

Chief Constable Praises Unstoppable Volunteer

Chief Constable Scott Chilton handed over Daniel’s award and said:

“Special Sergeant Daniel Van-Gelder is a motivated and experienced member of the force who gives a huge amount of his own time. He thoroughly deserves this recognition, and we’re proud of his relentless efforts to make life miserable for criminals.”
