Deadly Pyrenees Bus Crash Kills Three, Injures Eight Including Child

Fatal Crash Rocks Ski Resort Return Trip

A tragic bus crash near a Pyrenees ski resort in southwest France has claimed three lives and left eight critically injured, including a young child. The horror unfolded late Sunday afternoon on the RN320 road near Porté-Puymorens, close to the Andorran border.

The Spanish tourist coach, carrying 48 passengers on their way back to Barcelona from a Christmas shopping spree in Andorra, smashed into a cliff face and overturned.

Emergency services sprang into action fast. Over 100 firefighters and five helicopters rushed to the scene to rescue and airlift the injured to nearby hospitals.

Witnesses Describe Frantic Final Moments

An off-duty firefighter driving behind the coach, named Laurent, revealed chilling details to L’Indépendant:

“We were driving behind. The driver had been zigzagging for about a kilometre and a half. It seemed like he was trying to rub the barrier, as if he wanted to lose speed, before crashing into the cliff.”

Early reports suggest brake failure on the narrow, twisting RN320 road caused the disaster. Though the route has sharp bends, it’s not usually known for serious crashes like this.

Victims, Rescue Efforts, and Official Response

The dead and injured include Spanish and Colombian nationals. Among the critically hurt is a four-year-old child travelling with their parents.

A psychological support unit has been set up in Porté-Puymorens to aid survivors and families.

France’s Transport Minister François Durovray took to X (formerly Twitter) to offer condolences:

“My thoughts are with the families of the victims and all those injured. I commend the emergency services, security forces, and local authorities for their swift action.”

Passengers Recall Terrifying Ordeal

Survivors described the terrifying moments before the crash. One passenger shared footage showing emergency crews swarming the scene and said:

“The left turbine engine failed, and the driver tried to control the descent before the bus hit the cliff.”

Ongoing Investigation and Safety Warnings

Authorities are probing the coach’s mechanical condition and road safety measures. Jean-Philippe Augé, Mayor of Porté-Puymorens, stressed the rare gravity of the accident:

“This is a tragedy, and the human toll could rise. The RN320 has never been the site of such serious accidents until now.”

A Day of Merriment Ends in Disaster

The passengers had spent the day enjoying the festive markets and scenic views of El Pas de la Casa, Andorra’s popular ski resort. Their return trip turned into one of the deadliest road accidents in the region’s recent history.

Further updates will follow as investigations continue and support is offered to affected families.
