Met Police Warn Protesters: No Exemptions for Saturday’s Rally Amid Covid Crackdown
Strict Covid Rules Shut Down London Protests
The Met Police have issued a blunt warning to anyone planning to join the protest in London this Saturday, 28 November. Under the current Coronavirus regulations, protests are not a legal reason to gather. Anyone caught flouting the rules risks swift enforcement action.
The Government’s tough national regulations are designed to stop Covid spreading. And the Met is dead serious about enforcing them on the streets of London this weekend.
Top Cop Issues Stern Warning
Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell, who’s in charge of policing this weekend, said:
“The Met has a proud history of facilitating protest. But right now, we’re locked in a critical fight against Covid-19. We cannot allow gatherings that put the progress and sacrifices of our communities at risk.”
“We will act against prohibited gatherings, including protests, across the capital. Public safety is our top priority. Anyone breaking the law and risking their own health, or that of others, will face consequences. If you’re thinking of attending, I urge you to think again and stay home.”
Police Monitor Coaches & Travel Into London
This week, officers have been liaising with policing partners and coach companies nationwide. They are keeping a close eye on reports that protest organisers are hiring coaches to bring people into London from all over the country.
As part of the policing plan, authorities will monitor and potentially intercept coaches travelling into the capital.
Chief Supt Bell Slams Risky Travel Plans
He added:
“Travelling to London for protests not only breaks the law, but it risks spreading the virus across multiple regions. We urge people not to travel. If they do, they face swift enforcement action.”
