Sussex Flag Spat Sparks Fears and Fury

Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne has stepped up amid rising tensions over a sudden surge of flag displays across Sussex. What some see as patriotic pride is making others on edge and worried about community clashes.

Patriotic Pride or Provocative Posturing?

Bourne recognises the UK’s strong attachment to national flags but warns these symbols are sparking division in parts of Sussex.

“Millions of people in our islands are patriotic and deeply attached to the flags of their home nations and the United Kingdom,” she said. “In less fractious times, seeing your flag normally instils feelings of belonging and pride… However, it is clear that in some places, the appearance of flags is making some communities feel deliberately targeted and intimidated.”

She stressed that while the flag-holders may act from genuine pride, their displays are unintentionally fanning anxiety and risking violent fallout.

Calls for Calm as Flag Fallout Escalates

Bourne urged politicians and community leaders to “lower the temperature” and heal divisions instead of worsening them. Meanwhile, council workers removing flags from public property have faced verbal abuse and threats — inflaming tempers even more.

Although Sussex Police aren’t responsible for taking down flags, Bourne made it clear officers will enforce the law strictly.

“The Chief Constable has also reassured me that Sussex Police will not tolerate violent, abusive behaviour or attempts to provoke confrontation.”

Sussex on Edge as Flag Furore Grows

This heightening flag frenzy has stirred tensions across communities, leaving Sussex at a crossroads. The pride that flags normally inspire now risks tearing communities apart.
