Knife Crime Crackdown: Hundreds Nabbed by London’s Violent Crime Taskforce
London’s new Violent Crime Taskforce is smashing it after six months on the beat. Set up to tackle spiralling knife and violent crime, this elite squad of 150 officers has made a massive impact since April. Using daring, intelligence-led tactics, they’ve arrested more than 1,300 criminals and seized hundreds of deadly weapons.
Brutal Numbers: Arrests and Weapons Off the Streets
- 1,361 arrests made between April 1 and September 21
- 40 firearms recovered
- 340 knives taken off London streets
- 258 offensive weapons seized
The taskforce isn’t working alone. They’ve been backed up by an extra 122 officers from the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command (RTPC), beefing up patrols in London’s most dangerous areas. This boost allows more targeted stop-and-search operations and covert surveillance of known criminals.
On The Hunt: Armed Patrols and High-Risk Zones
Officers patrol in plain clothes and uniform, running over 2,600 weapon sweeps and executing 105 search warrants so far. Knife arches pop up regularly in busy public spots and transport hubs. Meanwhile, the taskforce teams up with borough cops, Trident units, and community partners to keep pressure on violent offenders.
Chief Superintendent Ade Adelekan, Violent Crime Taskforce lead: “This Taskforce was formed to disrupt criminality caused by those intent on creating violence, carrying knives and putting London at risk. The teams operate across the city, working around the clock targeting hotspot locations where violence and knife crime is a real issue. Our presence in these areas sends a clear message to offenders, that we intend on stopping them in their tracks.” “Our enforcement teams play a vital role in the reduction of violence, but the work that goes into building relationships and providing reassurance to locals is just as important. Over the past six months, we’ve made significant inroads into communities where violence is a real issue, and we will continue to do so on a daily basis.”
Sadiq Khan Backs Taskforce With Millions and More Officers
Mayor Sadiq Khan has thrown £15 million behind the taskforce and supports the move of additional RTPC officers into the unit. He said:
“The new Violent Crime Taskforce was set up with £15 million from City Hall and, in its first six months, its officers have made over 1,300 arrests and removed more than 600 knives and dangerous weapons off our streets. To bolster the vital work of the 150 officers, the Commissioner and I made the difficult decision to move 122 officers from the Roads and Transport Command to strengthen the Taskforce still further as part of our ongoing commitment to drive down knife and violent crime in London.”
With such firepower and a no-nonsense approach, London’s streets have never seen a squad this tough on violent crime. But this is just the start — the Taskforce vows to keep hunting criminals and cleaning up our city.
