Top Cop Simon Nelson Snags Prestigious Award for Disability Advocacy
Superintendent Simon Nelson, the Police Superintendents’ Association (PSA) disability lead, has bagged a top honour for his outstanding work supporting disabled officers and staff across UK policing.
Championing Disabled Officers Against the Odds
Simon, also president of the National Disabled Police Association, has been a powerhouse champion for disabled members nationwide. Diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2004 and having undergone full stomach removal in 2006, he refuses to let health setbacks hold him back.
He continues to serve as a firearms and public order commander with Sussex Police, tackling some of the force’s toughest roles while pushing disability inclusion to the forefront.
“I am both astounded and thrilled to receive this honour, especially during Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee,” Simon told us. “I used to have little faith in the future, but it’s now even brighter, especially as I enter my final year in policing.”
Leading Change on Disability and Diversity
Simon’s influence goes beyond physical disabilities. As Disabled Police Association president, he campaigns on wider diversity issues including neurodiversity. He also serves on the advisory board of Cancer Central UK, helping cancer patients access vital support.
PSA President Paul Fotheringham praised Simon’s tireless dedication:
“Despite his own health issues, he has dedicated himself to policing as a senior officer and champion for disabled colleagues. Since Simon took up his PSA role, the number of members identifying as disabled has tripled, boosting support and understanding across the board.”
Simon’s Legacy: Changing Policing for the Better
His work has shaped key national policy on fitness testing, performance rules, capability dismissal, and tackling disability discrimination—ensuring a fairer, more inclusive police workforce for the future.
Chief Constable Jo Shiner summed it up perfectly:
“Simon’s story is an inspiration. His impact on policing and his national leadership is a brilliant example of turning life’s challenges into a force for good. We are all incredibly proud of his achievements.”
