Massive Scrap Yard Blaze Rages for Almost 24 Hours
A huge scrapyard fire on East Twin Road has been burning fiercely since just before 1pm yesterday. Around 40 firefighters were still battling the flames this morning, surrounded by piles of old cars and scrap metal.
Thick Smoke Forces Local Residents Indoors
The towering smoke and intense flames darkened the skyline, forcing police to warn nearby homeowners to stay inside and keep windows shut. By dawn, fire crews had the fire contained but were still dousing hotspots, working hard to bring it fully under control.

- Over 50 firefighters battled the blaze at its peak
- Two fireboats called in to fight the scrap yard inferno from the water
- Metal fires suspected, known for bursting into flames spontaneously and being notoriously tough to extinguish
Fire chiefs have warned that metal fires require specialist tactics, explaining why the firefighting effort has been so prolonged and complex.
