Man Shot Dead by Police in Early Hours Standoff in Swindon
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an urgent investigation after a 57-year-old man was fatally shot during a police response in Swindon just after 2am today.
Deadly Police Shooting in Summers Street
The incident unfolded on Summers Street, Rodbourne, when officers responded to reports of a heated argument between two men in the street. Shortly after arriving, police discharged their weapons, killing the man.
Police have sealed off the area. Officers discovered a non-police issue firearm on the ground near an Armed Response Vehicle. Crime scene investigators are swarming the scene.
IOPC Confirms Fatal Shooting
A spokesperson for the police watchdog said: “At this early stage, it is believed a 57-year-old man has been fatally shot during the police response to reports of two men arguing in the street.”
The man was pronounced dead just before 3am on Sunday.
Independent Probe Underway
“Our thoughts and sympathies are with all those affected by this terrible incident,” the IOPC added.
Investigators are currently at the scene, collecting evidence and taking initial statements from key police witnesses. The independent inquiry is mandatory whenever police fatally shoot a member of the public.
The IOPC emphasised its established protocols with police ensure their probe won’t obstruct ongoing police enquiries related to the incident.
