Junior Doctors Set to Strike, Threatening NHS Chaos
A major junior doctors’ strike kicks off Tuesday and runs until early Saturday, piling massive pressure on NHS staff and services nationwide.
Quarter of a Million Patients at Risk
NHS England warns up to 250,000 patients could be affected by the industrial action. While appointments and operations won’t be cancelled unless absolutely necessary, the disruption is expected to ramp up as rescheduling chaos unfolds across multiple teams.
Officials urge patients with confirmed appointments to keep turning up as planned to avoid added backlog.
Strike Over 15 Years of Pay Erosion
The British Medical Association (BMA) says junior doctors have lost more than 25% of their pay in real terms over the last 15 years. They demand Health Secretary Steve Barclay negotiate a “credible” pay offer to end the dispute.
Health Secretary Draws the Line
But Barclay hit back in The Sunday Telegraph, insisting talks will only happen if the strikes are called off first. He slammed the BMA’s pay demands as “out of step” with public sector settlements, warning a pay rise of this size could see some junior doctors earning more than £16,000 extra annually — a sum he branded “unreasonable.”
BMA Holds Firm but Hopes for Last-Minute Deal
Dr Mike Greenhalgh, deputy co-chair of the BMA’s Junior Doctors Committee, pleaded with the government to make a genuine offer that can halt the strike, even at this late stage.
