Police have identified Dickson Ndiema, Cheptegei’s former boyfriend, as the prime suspect. It’s alleged Ndiema bought the petrol, poured it over her, and ignited the flames following a heated argument. The dispute reportedly centred on land where Cheptegei’s home was built.
Athletics Community Mourns A Tragic Loss
Cheptegei, known for her prowess in marathon and 10,000m races, had recently moved to Trans Nzoia to be closer to elite training facilities. Her family said the move reflected her absolute dedication to athletics.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, who tragically fell victim to domestic violence,” said the Ugandan Athletics Federation. “We condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace.”
