Wiltshire Police Sound Alarm on Rental Scams in Salisbury and Wilton

Wiltshire Police are warning locals to stay sharp as rental scams hit Salisbury and Wilton hard. Since June, officers have logged eight reports about a crook posing as a landlord, showing fake properties to hopeful renters. Victims hand over deposits and sign contracts, only for the so-called landlord to vanish without a trace.

Police Crack Down on Rental Fraud

Complex Fraud Manager Cheryl Hurren said: “We are taking these reports very seriously and investigating them thoroughly. With the rental market so competitive, people might rush into deals, but I urge everyone to be 100% sure before committing.”

Top Tips to Dodge Rental Scams

  1. Verify the Advertiser: Don’t send any money before confirming the landlord or agent is legit.
  2. Physical Verification: If you’re renting from abroad, get help from your employer, university, or a trusted contact to check the property exists.
  3. Visit the Property: Never pay upfront without seeing the place with the landlord or an agent in person.
  4. Request Documentation: Always ask for tenancy agreements and safety certificates, such as Gas, Electricity, or HMO licences.
  5. Avoid Pressure: Watch out for urgent payment demands. Don’t fork out large sums without proper checks.
