Forensics Pin Down Spitting Suspect in Bexleyheath Bus Attack
A man has been arrested after spitting at a bus driver in Bexleyheath, thanks to forensic evidence and CCTV footage.
Spitting Incident on Broadway Bus
Just after 1am on Wednesday, 25 March, an 18-year-old boarded a bus on Broadway, Bexleyheath. Trouble started when he tried to pay his fare with an unusable bank card.
The driver refused him travel without a valid ticket – and the suspect responded by spitting straight at him.
Forensic Evidence Leads to Arrest
The victim sprang into action, using a special testing kit provided by TfL staff for incidents like this to collect evidence.
The Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command launched an investigation. CCTV footage from the bus captured the attacker’s image, which helped officers identify him.
The DNA from the spit matched the suspect, sealing the case.
Arrest Made, Suspect Held
On Wednesday, 29 April, police arrested the 18-year-old on suspicion of common assault. He is currently in custody at a south London police station.

“This is a vile crime at any time, but is even more abhorrent given the concerns around the risk of contracting coronavirus,” said Chief Inspector Dave Monk of the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command.
