Man Rescued After Plunging 8 Feet Into Workshop Trench in Bembridge
Firefighters and emergency crews raced to GP Motor Workshops on Embankment Road, Bembridge, after a man in his 50s fell 8 feet down a work trench inside the garage. The dramatic rescue unfolded just after 1.15pm on Monday.
Major Emergency Response at GP Motor Workshops
Two fire crews from Newport and Ryde, a rapid response paramedic, a land ambulance, and an air ambulance— which even landed at nearby Bembridge Airport—quickly arrived at the scene. Police closed a nearby road to allow the air ambulance to touch down safely.
The trapped man was stuck in the inspection pit for over an hour. Emergency medics, including an air ambulance doctor, worked urgently to stabilise him. They performed a rapid sequence induction procedure to help manage his injuries before extraction.
High-Stakes Rescue Using Scope Stretcher
Fire crews carefully lifted the injured man out with a scope stretcher, ensuring minimal movement. By 2.31pm, the man was safely secured in the ambulance for a short transfer to the waiting helicopter.
Man Airlifted to Hospital as Crews Stand Down
At 2.42pm, Tac Ad Graham Orchard from Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue detailed the fire service’s role in the rescue. The man was flown to Southampton General Hospital for urgent treatment. By 2.55pm, police and fire crews had stood down, and GP Motors remained closed with shutters down.
Police have since lifted the road closure, with no ongoing traffic delays reported in the area.
