Brutal Christmas Attack: Barnsley Man Jailed for 16 Years

A Barnsley man has been slammed with a 16-year jail sentence after unleashing a brutal, unprovoked attack on two sisters at a Christmas party – leaving them mentally and physically scarred for life.

Frenzied Assault Ends Only When Sister Shields Victim

David Fairweather, 44, went on a vicious rampage, punching, choking, and stabbing his first victim until her elder sister bravely lay atop her to stop the carnage. The older sister, however, was then stabbed three times and endured injuries so severe she spent nearly five months in hospital.

Heroic Young Sons Raise Alarm as Bloodbath Unfolds

The horrifying scene unfolded in a Cudworth home in Barnsley. The younger sister’s sons, aged just eight and nine, heard the chaos and rushed downstairs to find their mum and auntie covered in blood.

Despite the trauma, the boys managed to call emergency services with enough detail for a swift response.

“Both boys were simply heroic,” said Detective Sergeant Becky Robinson. “The nine-year-old told Fairweather he was phoning the police and to get out, which forced him to flee.”

Fairweather was later found hiding in a nearby churchyard.

Devastating Aftermath for Victims

  • The younger sister was released from hospital the day after the attack but suffers ongoing psychological trauma. She and her sons haven’t been able to return home.
  • The older sister stayed in hospital for nearly five months, including 15 days in a coma. She suffered life-threatening injuries to her liver, lung, bowel, and bladder, with permanent scarring on both women.

“This horrendous ordeal was the stuff of nightmares,” said DS Robinson. “The sisters invited Fairweather in for a pre-Christmas drink, never expecting this horrific betrayal. Their lives have changed forever.”

“While nothing can undo the trauma, I am satisfied Fairweather will spend many years behind bars, where he belongs.”
