Grandson Admits Killing Grandfather and Neighbour’s Cat in Chilling Crime
Benjamin Dunlop, currently with no fixed address, faced Leicester Crown Court today to be sentenced for the brutal crime he confessed to last November.
Tragic Discovery in Measham Home
Ronald Dunlop, 75, was discovered dead at a home in Hart Drive, Measham, where he was staying temporarily with his grandson, Benjamin. The grim find was made just before 5pm on Wednesday, 1 December 2021, after East Midlands Ambulance Service were called to the scene over concerns about the welfare of both men and fears Benjamin might have harmed himself.
Alongside Ronald’s body, officers found a dead cat that belonged to a neighbour. Benjamin returned shortly after and admitted to harming both his grandfather and the cat to the ambulance crew present.
Facing Justice: Murder and Animal Cruelty Charges
- Benjamin was charged with murder two days later.
- He was also charged with criminal damage for killing the cat.
- The animal cruelty charge brought him a six-month sentence to run concurrently.
“Firstly my thoughts remain with the family of Ronald,” said Detective Chief Inspector Nicole Main from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit. “While this sentence doesn’t bring him back or mend the tragic situation this family faces, knowing Benjamin is serving time for his actions will, I hope, help them move on after this long wait for justice.”
