Chelmsford council slams the brakes on Bassment Bar

Chelmsford City Council’s licensing sub-committee pulled the plug on Bassment Bar’s licence on 2 March. The Wells Street venue can’t serve alcohol until a full hearing, set for before 28 March. Operators have the option to appeal the decision.

Licence review triggered by February incident

The licence suspension follows an application to review after a troubling incident at the bar on 25 February.

Police vow crackdown on night-time rowdiness

Essex Police’s Night-time Economy boss, Superintendent Stuart Weaver, confirmed the move. He said: “This premises has had its licence suspended by the council, working in partnership with our team in Chelmsford.”

Weaver added: “We are committed to keeping people safe while they enjoy a night out in Chelmsford, or anywhere else in the county. Officers will be on duty day and night throughout the Spring and Summer to keep our cities, towns, and villages safe.”
