Drug bust: Cannabis factory uncovered in Peterborough raid

Warrant leads to major cannabis haul

On 15 December last year, police’s Neighbourhood Support Team swooped on Varity House, Fengate, Peterborough, targeting suspected drug supply.

Inside was 27-year-old Genc Gjergje, who was immediately arrested for failing to appear at court. He was hauled before Huntingdon Magistrates that very day.

A quick check of Gjergje’s phone revealed selfies with towering cannabis plants and documents tied to properties in Bretton and Yaxley.

Officers tracked down a cannabis factory with 133 plants at a house on Clipston Walk, Bretton. Another address, 123 Fletton, linked to Gjergje, was raided too – but only remnants of a grow operation were found.

Gjergje jailed for nearly two years

Homeless Gjergje faced Peterborough Crown Court yesterday (Tuesday), where he copped a 22-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to production and conspiracy charges.

Detective Constable Kevin Poole, the lead investigator, said: “Cannabis factories are often linked to wider criminality and organised crime groups (OCGs), bringing violence and anti-social behaviour to our communities.

“We have a dedicated team focused on disrupting OCGs. With the public’s help by passing on info, we can shut down more factories and hit them financially, just like in this case.”
