Crime Squad Hits 1,000 Charges in First Year

Kent’s Chief Constable’s Crime Squad has smashed through a massive milestone – tallying over 1,000 charges in just over a year since launching in February 2019. Focused on cracking down on burglars, robbers, and repeat offenders, the squad made more than 300 arrests in year one alone.

Over 370 Years Behind Bars Secured

Not just about the arrests, this elite team has secured prison sentences totaling a whopping 377 years. They’ve also executed 87 warrants targeting crooks who attack victims at random across the county.

“This team goes after offenders who cause real harm and distress to our communities – and that’s exactly what we’ve done,” said Chief Constable Alan Pughsley. “To reach over 1,000 charges and 370 years in prison in just one year is a huge achievement.”

Key Wins Against Shoplifters, Burglars, and More

  • Four Dartford shop robbers copped 34 years collectively after pleading guilty thanks to strong evidence.
  • A Medway man was convicted of five sexual offences against local women.
  • Serial burglars nicking charity boxes in Canterbury and Thanet were brought to justice.

Funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner’s council tax precept, the squad works county-wide alongside local police, serious crime units, and tactical teams.

Detective Chief Insp. Vows: “No Rest for Offenders”

Detective Chief Inspector Lopa McDermott, leading the Crime Squad, said: “Every case has a victim, and we’re dedicated to supporting them and stopping repeat offending. Criminals thinking of striking in Kent should know we have the resources to catch them and put them in court.”

“Despite a stellar year, we won’t rest on our laurels. We’re pushing ahead to protect communities, prioritise victims, and make sure criminals face justice.”
