Daring Police Chase Ends with Driver Nabbed After High-Speed Pursuit
Stolen Car Drama on Winterstoke Road
Zachary Williams, 28, sparked a tense police chase on Friday 24 November at around 5.40pm. Officers spotted him behind the wheel of a black Citroen C2, suspected to be stolen, during a routine patrol in Winterstoke Road. Williams ignored orders to stop and led police on a dangerous pursuit.
Helicopter Tracks Reckless Driver
The chase quickly escalated across Weston-super-Mare. With Williams refusing to give in, officers followed him on the ground while the National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter kept eyes from above. The pursuit lasted roughly 20 minutes, with the suspect hurtling through busy streets, including the seafront, at excessive speeds during rush hour.
Hiding Spot in Milton Fails to Save Him
Eventually, Williams pulled over in a residential area of Milton but tried one last dodge by hiding in a private garden. Police weren’t fooled and apprehended him on the spot. Williams, from Caerphilly, was arrested and slapped with multiple charges: dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, no insurance, and failure to provide a specimen for analysis.
Guilty Plea and Imminent Sentence
Williams appeared at North Somerset Courthouse on Monday 27 November. He pleaded guilty to all charges and was remanded in custody. His sentencing is set for 12 December at Bristol Crown Court.
PC Marcus Cookson said: “Williams travelled at excessive speeds during rush-hour across large parts of Weston-super-Mare, including the seafront, in an effort to avoid arrest. Between pursuit-trained officers on the ground and NPAS’ skilled pilots, he was unsuccessful and will be sentenced in a couple of weeks’ time after an efficient investigation.
“It is pleasing to get another reckless motorist off the roads, especially as it coincided with Road Safety Week in which we have sought to raise awareness of dangerous driving.”
