Kevin Spaine Jailed for Life Over Brutal Manslaughter of Learoy Venner
Kevin Spaine, 43, a drifter with no fixed address, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 18 years after pleading guilty to manslaughter. The Liverpool Crown Court handed down the sentence on Wednesday, February 22, following a deadly attack last July.
Deadly Assault Rocks Belmont Drive
It all unfolded around 3pm on Wednesday, 27 July, when emergency services rushed to a house on Belmont Drive. They found 53-year-old Learoy Venner suffering severe head injuries. Despite their efforts, Learoy tragically died in hospital.
The post mortem revealed multiple forceful blows to the head caused his fatal brain injury. Spaine brutally assaulted Learoy and then shockingly fled without raising the alarm.
Detective Condemns Spaine’s Denial and Escape
Detective Chief Inspector Judith Blease slammed Spaine for his lies and escape attempt: “Spaine compounded the suffering of Learoy’s family by denying murder and changing his story to avoid responsibility. We now know he repeatedly struck Learoy before running off and leaving him to die.”
“Thanks to a relentless police investigation that broke through every obstacle Spaine put up, justice has been served. While no sentence can heal the family’s pain, this conviction helps them begin to come to terms with last July’s devastation.”
Family Pays Emotional Tribute to ‘Gentle Soul’ Learoy
Learoy’s siblings shared a heartfelt Victim Personal Statement at court:
“Learning of the tragic passing of our beloved brother Learoy has been beyond difficult. He had a beautiful personality and a loving, gentle soul. We will hold him close in our hearts forever.
“Many of us were overwhelmed by the court process and couldn’t face attending. Our lives are shattered, but we are grateful to the Prosecuting and Family Liaison Teams for their support through this agony.
“As the case closes, we hope to finally begin carrying the burden of losing our brother.”
