BANK WORKER BUSTED: Swindled Family Out of £74k in Cold Blood
Hien Ly, 40, from Deptford, has been sentenced to 28 months behind bars at Woolwich Crown Court for ripping off her own family. The former bank employee pleaded guilty to seven counts of fraud by false representation, with an extra 12 months added concurrently for another count.
Trusted Employee Runs Con to Steal Family Cash
Between November 2012 and May 2019, Ly exploited her role on the counter at a Greenwich High Street bank to con three of her family members out of a whopping £74,620.97. She spun a tale of investing their money in property deals and exclusive “investments,” promising her insider banking status meant better rates.
But the truth was far nastier.
Fake Investments Fund Lavish Lifestyle
Ly kept squeezing more cash out of her victims, claiming extra costs or threatening loss of deals unless they paid up. She handed them doctored documents showing fake property purchases and returns — all smoke and mirrors.
In reality, none of their money was invested. Instead, Ly blew it on a lavish lifestyle while leaving her family penniless.
Police Speak Out on Family Betrayal
“Ly manipulated her position as a bank employee to gain the trust of her victims, before fraudulently stealing more than £74,000,” said Police Constable Stewart Bold of the Economic Crime Team. “Her victims saw her as successful and put their faith in her, investing large sums believing it was safe and lucrative.” “This sentencing reflects the severity of her actions and the shocking nature of this crime — especially as it targeted her own family. We hope this brings some justice and closure for the victims.”
Ly was finally arrested at work on 20 May 2019 after the fraud was reported through Action Fraud.
