Ex-Folkestone Resident Arrested for Forced Marriage Attempt
Sami Firat, 48, faces serious charges for allegedly trying to force a teenage girl into marriage. The offence reportedly took place between June 2016 and October 2017.
Threats and Coercion Alleged in Shocking Crime
Police claim Firat used violence, threats, or coercion to arrange the forced marriage. He is also accused of arranging or facilitating the girl’s travel to Turkey, where she was at risk of exploitation.
Kent Police Crack Down on Forced Marriage and Human Trafficking
The investigation was carried out by Kent Police’s Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking team. Firat, from St Mary Street, Thornbury, bristol/" title="Bristol" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Bristol, was arrested at Bristol Airport on 16 September 2020 after returning from Vienna, Austria.
He was remanded in custody following a hearing at Medway magistrates on 18 September and is set to appear at crown court on 19 October.
